Roy was privileged to be tutored under a master painter, Uncle Ed.

The generation that preceded Roy was a family of painters who were self-employed. Roy can remember as a kid working on some of the jobs, but his real training occurred after a 4-year tour in the Marine corp. He Returned to the Family business.

“We did not use tape for cutting in. It was a must to master the art of a 4" brush on the walls and ceiling cut in. We cut the base, jambs, and cabinets without masking tape. The next training was the making of color putty to perfectly hide a nail hole. Spraying Lacquer was a method of knowing where you start and where you end without leaving overspray on an adjacent surface. Rolling walls was to be accomplished with a perfect look or do it over.

Making colors was a normal part of the training. I recall a grand staircase that featured a marble shipped from Italy, the designer was from Europe, and they did not have enough Marble to fabricate the 12 ft toe kick off the floor. The designer returned to Italy and my Uncle Ed did a museum quality marbelization that mirrored the floor. On the designer's return in shock, he asked, ‘Where did you find this marble?’” Roy Miller
